Billy & the Armor of God

By Kimberly L. Curtin-Geisler

"Lets see now," said Billy, "I got my sword, my shield, my shoes..."

"Hi Billy," Milly interrupted. "What are you doing?"

"I busy puttin´ on the armer-ah-God," he replied.

"That´s not how you put on the armor of God," Milly corrected

"Sure it is," Billy said sternly. "The Bible says to put on the whole armer-a-God so I can wit-stan´ evil everyday."

"You mean 'withstand in the evil day´," she gently corrected.

Billy was beginning to get a little frustrated with his older sister. "Yeah, whatever," he said. "Eider way I ready to fight off evil."

"Not so fast there, little soldier. First you must learn what the Bible says about the real Armor of God."

"Okay," Billy said with a sigh. "But make it fass, I got a lots a evils to destroy and it might take me all day."

"Well," Milly began, "In Ephesians 6:11, the Bible does say `put on the whole armour of God,´ but in verse 12 it continues to say `for we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places´."

"So, what does that mean?" Billy asked as he swirled his sword around pretending to stab at some invisible evil-doers.

"That means that the only way to put on the armor of God is by praying and asking God to put it on you."

"What´s wrong with the suit I have?" Billy asked indignantly.

"The devil will tear you up in that suit," she replied. "What you need is

    • the skirt of truth
    • the breastplate of righteousness,
    • your feet shod (or shoes) of the preparation of the gospel of peace
    • the shield of faith
    • the helmet of salvation
    • and the sword of the spirit.

"And the only way to put on this armor is by praying and asking God to put it on you. Then you will be ready to fight off evil."

Billy set his sword and shield down and clasped his hands tightly together. He bowed his head and closed his eyes.

"Now what are you doing?" Milly inquired.

"I praying for God to put His suit-a-armer on me." Billy replied. "With His suit and mine I have double protection. Nothing can stand in my way now."

Milly took a deep breath and with a heavy exhale, sighed, "Oh, brother." And with that she left Billy to fight off the evil-doers...just him and God.
